Change Your Life Script

Have you ever heard someone talking about their life experience and next thing you know; it triggers your memory and transports you back to your early childhood. Suddenly, your mind bank is resurrected and it’s no longer dormant. If you have, then you have landed on the right site at the right time. Are you ready to explore ways to change your life script? However, not all scripts are bad.

Not All Scripts are Bad

No one is exempt from the early imprints of a life script. These scripts can come from parents, teachers, coaches, family members, authority figures, or peers. Some scripts are good, and they can empower us; other scripts have a negative impact and may devastate us. The latter has a bigger impact on our mind. These are highlighted in bold print. Let’s explore the power in life scripts.

What is Your Life Script

Memories form a print on your brain much like a computer program. You may not realize they exist. A life script is a subconscious life plan that we create in childhood through the interactions between us as children, and our primary caregivers. Scripts can also do damage our lives.

Scripts can Impose Restrictions in Life

We often have no idea that we’ve constructed the life script or where it comes from, but never-the-less, its power can impose destructive and unnecessary restrictions on our choices as adults. We are also drawn to people and experiences that reinforce this script. They are a part of human development.

A Script is a Healthy Developmental Step

A script is your attempt to make sense of the world. As such, the formation of a script is a healthy developmental step. If you didn’t have a script, you would be meeting a world anew in every moment; you would have nothing to connect the past to the present and the future; the world would be chaotic. It’s time to find out where these scripts come from.

Where Does Your Life Script Come From?

There is a phenomenon in Psychology called ‘life scripts,” which is one of the five clusters Transactional Analysis. This idea asserts that we all have life scripts which we play out on a day-to-day basis that determines
the outcomes in our life. It determines the choices we make.

Scripts Determine Life Choices

This script determines our career choice and our life goals. It is entrenched in our subconscious, and it governs the actions we take and the choices we make. It governs our behaviors. Our ambitions and our purpose in life. Scripts affect how we view the world.

Scripts Determines How We View Ourselves

Everything we do, according to theory, is merely a role-play of internally preconceived notions of how we view ourselves and our life. We are, in essence, acting out what we already see ourselves doing. This ‘life script” determines our routines, our habits, and our proclivities. It is the blueprint of our end-goals. These scripts are important in our livelihood.

Why are Scripts Important

Psychologists believe that our life scripts are usually created in childhood. Understanding how a particular script helps us see how it might be influencing our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. These scripts can be changed over time.

How Do We Change Our Script

Here are seven tips to help you change your scripts. Run and get a pen and paper so you can jot down the main steps. Since everyone is different, every life script is also different. Let’s get started.

Step 1 Review Your Core Beliefs

Take a step back and review your current core beliefs. Ask yourself where these beliefs come from. As a child you may have been scolded or disciplined for doing something or maybe you were told not to talk back and as an adult you hold back your voice and have trouble standing up for yourself.

It takes time to explore your early childhood beliefs. Eventually, some memory will surface, and you begin to move forward. Review your core beliefs. For example:

“Why do I scream at people?”

“Why do I sabotage my when I am trying to lose weight?”

‘Why do I always blame myself?”

Neutralize Your Limited Beliefs

Did you know that negative emotions around past memories and limited beliefs can be neutralized and change remarkably fast by creating a shift in your thinking and behaviors (Val Silver). Instead of spinning your wheels on the negative emotions, spend time on the new positive script.

Another option is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is a classification under Energy Psychology and Meridian Tapping Technique.

  • Restructure Your Core Beliefs
  • Identify your core beliefs and how they impact you.
  • Determine their origin.
  • Challenge yourself to accept that these negative thoughts are baseless.
  • Replace these beliefs with new ones.

Step 2 Acknowledge Your Past Core Beliefs

After you have reviewed your past core beliefs, the next step is to acknowledge your present core beliefs. An easy way to do this is to make a list of them. Then write your story as if you are living it already in the present tense. Believe it passionately. Have absolute confidence that you will materialize these beliefs.

  • Reach to people you cherish the most to create your cheerleader team.
  • Set a time frame when you want to see changes. You can break this into smaller episodes

Remember, in order to rewrite your life script, you have to admit that you have one, in order to progress. For example:

If your script is positive, and you admit something you did at work was challenging, but you completed it anyway – Keep this script. On the other hand, if a task at work became overwhelming and you got burnout and had to call in sick “you feel horrible, defeated and berated,” Change your script.

If you feel that “I never finish anything and I shoulda, woulda, coulda,“ – Change your script.

“We are shaped by our thoughts, we become what we think.” Buddha.

Step 3 Things that Spark Your Joy

What are 5 things you feel passionate about things that spark your joy in your life. This is your opportunity to find your passion, your why and find you voice.

Step 4 List Your Limiting Beliefs

Write a list of 10 things that you would love to do if you weren’t held back by fear or limiting self-beliefs. With effort, you can rewire your life script and take on a difficult stretch of our life.

Create your affirmations that you recite daily. For example:

Step 5 Create Your Daily Affirmations

“I will prioritize my self-care. List things that you want to happen, but you fear and still have limiting beliefs. Affirmations have the power to motivate you to act on certain things, help you to concentrate on achieving your goals in life, give you the power to change your negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thinking patterns, assist you in accessing a new belief system, but above all, affirmations can boost your self-esteem.

The 3 P’s of Affirmations

The most effective affirmations follow the 3 P’s of affirmations: Positive, Present, and Personal. Common mistake people make with affirmations is choosing poorly written affirmations. Childhood often times may render negative experiences.

Patterns of Unhelpful Childhood Experiences

From early childhood onward, I was around negative people in a negative environment. However, I had no idea how negative it was until much later in my life. My beliefs were that I would always have limited resources and very little hope for a successful future. Lucky for me, I had someone on my side.

A Support System is Important.

The one person that supported me and gave me hope was our community leader, Mrs. Veal. She gave me and other youth hope and a new perspective. She helped me change my script. Her mission was to “save, heal, and inspire.” I have re-written my life script and I am living my best life. In fact, I have let go of my limiting beliefs and my past. You can too. Remember it took time to build Rome.

It Takes Time to Change

Rome was not built in a day, a week, or a month. You can change you script. However, it takes time. It will not happen overnight. One day at a time, one script at a time. Your perspectives and outlook on life will change, too. So, give yourself the goof life and mindset it deserves. You are in a new day now.

Final Thoughts

Every human being will develop life scripts over their lifetimes. Unfortunately, some of these scripts are deleterious to a person. However, you have the power to change these scripts by changing your thought patterns. You can, I effect, reverse engineer these negative scripts and move forward in your life.
